Experiencing difficulty in life is unavoidable and eliminating difficulty in life is impossible. The hardship we suffer however provides an essential function. It is through difficulty that we learn, that we develop meaning, and it is how we adapt. Hard times will come and will befall us all. The “slings and arrows outrageous fortune” are forever drawn against us. We must accept difficulty as part of living in reality and always be ready to confront it, not resist it or cower from it. When we are vigilant and prepared we can then control our reactions to life. We cannot stop the “arrows of outrageous fortune,” but we can learn how to counter them.
Even though arduous and demanding times are inescapable in life, the feeling of life should not be difficult all the time. We should not feel like Sisyphus each day pushing the boulder of our own existence uphill. When a person is suffering from anxiety and/or depression they often feel that the most basic tasks of life are insurmountable. For some people only certain areas of life (work, relationships, school) are difficult while other areas feel fine. Dealing with difficulty can be extremely challenging and sometimes we need help. If you feel your anxiety and/or depression makes all of life strenuous or if you experienced hardship that you are unable to overcome, psychotherapy can help.
